FAQs

What should I expect at my first visit?

Your first visit typically includes a comprehensive evaluation of your injury or condition, followed by a personalized treatment plan tailored to your recovery goals.

Do I need a doctor's referral to start physical therapy?

Not always. New York lets you see a licensed physical therapist without a referral for up to 10 visits or 30 days. Many insurance plans, including most no-fault and workers' compensation cases, still require a prescription, so bring one if you have it and our staff will check what your plan needs.

What orthopedic conditions do you treat?

We treat back and neck pain, herniated discs, sciatica, joint pain and arthritis, sprains and strains, tendinitis, sports injuries, auto accident and work injuries, and recovery after orthopedic surgery such as joint replacements, ACL repairs and rotator cuff repairs.

How long does each session last?

Most sessions last 45 to 60 minutes. Your first visit may run a little longer because it includes a full evaluation.

How many visits will I need?

It depends on your condition, how long you have had it and your goals. Many patients come two to three times a week for four to eight weeks. Your therapist re-checks your progress regularly and adjusts the plan as you improve.

Will physical therapy hurt?

Some soreness is normal as you start using injured muscles and joints again, much like after a new workout. Therapy should not cause sharp or lasting pain. Tell your therapist how you feel and they will adjust the treatment.

What should I wear to my appointments?

Wear comfortable, loose clothing and supportive sneakers. Choose clothes that let us reach the area being treated, such as shorts for a knee or hip, or a tank top for a shoulder.

When should I start rehab after surgery?

Often within a few days to two weeks, depending on the procedure and your surgeon's instructions. Starting on time helps control swelling, protect the repair and restore motion sooner. Bring your surgeon's protocol or prescription to your first visit.

Can physical therapy help me avoid surgery?

For many conditions, yes. Back pain, disc problems, meniscus and rotator cuff injuries and arthritis often improve with targeted exercise and hands-on treatment. If you are not progressing as expected, we will let you and your doctor know.

Will I have exercises to do at home?

Yes. Your therapist will give you a short home exercise program to keep your progress going between visits. Doing it regularly is one of the biggest factors in how quickly you recover.
