Lymphedema Treatment

Lymphedema is swelling that develops when the lymphatic system cannot drain fluid properly, often in an arm or leg. It can follow surgery, radiation, infection, or injury, and it tends to persist without a structured treatment approach. Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Center of Brooklyn offers lymphedema treatment designed to reduce swelling, protect skin health, and help patients manage the condition over time.

What Treatment Involves

  • Manual Techniques — gentle, hands-on methods that encourage fluid to move toward healthy drainage pathways.
  • Compression Strategies — bandaging or garments that support tissue and limit fluid build-up between sessions.
  • Kinesiology Tape — elastic tape applied to support the affected limb while still allowing movement.
  • Guided Exercise — movement on our exercise mats and with resistance bands to support circulation without overloading the limb.

Ongoing Management

Because lymphedema is a long-term condition, treatment often includes education on self-care, skin protection, and home exercise so progress made in the clinic continues at home. Sessions typically take place on our adjustable treatment tables, allowing the limb to be positioned comfortably throughout care.

Who This Is For

  • Post-Surgical Patients — especially those who have had lymph nodes removed or altered.
  • Chronic Swelling — individuals noticing persistent, one-sided limb swelling.
  • Recurrent Cases — patients needing periodic reassessment and compression adjustments.
